News - Traffic disrupted for over 2 hrs at Shahbagh as DU students demonstrate
Dhaka, Sept 2 (UNB) – Dhaka University students staged a sit-in at the city’s Shahbagh crossing on Sunday to press home their five-point demand.

Over 100 students of the university took to the streets at about 11:15 am, disrupting traffic for over two hours in the area.

Their demands include exemplary punishment of the driver of a bus that killed a university student at the crossing and Tk 10 million (one crore) compensation for the victim’s family from the bus owners, construction of a footbridge at the crossing and stopping the movement of heavy vehicle through the campus.

The students also demanded that the university authorities submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister for ensuring the safety of all the students.

Later, the students withdrew their demonstration programme at about 1:45 pm when executive officer of Dhaka City Corporation (south) Sultanul Islam assured them of building a footbridge at the Shahbagh crossing within 15 days.

DU proctor Amzad Ali also visited the spot, talked to the agitating students and assured them of taking steps for halting the movement of vehicles on the campus.

Traffic came to a halt in and around the area following the agitation programme, creating a long tailback on each side of the road in the area.

The DU students took to the streets again today to protest the killing of Towhid Zaman, a 2nd year student of International Relations Department of the university at the Shahbag intersection on August 28.

He met the accident while returning to his dormitory after participating in a meeting of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
