Minister for increased int'l support to reduce illiteracy

Dhaka, Sept 7 (UNB) - Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr M Afsarul Ameen has underscored the need for renewed national efforts and increased international support to achieve the target of significantly reducing illiteracy by 2015.

The minister made the observation while chairing a ministerial roundtable at the Unesco headquarters in Paris on Thursday, according to a message received here on Friday.

Ministers and high level delegations from 41 countries attended the two-day meet titled "Reaching the 2015 Literacy Target: Delivering on the Promise" that began on yesterday.

Highlighting the strong commitment of Bangladesh government to eradicating illiteracy, Afsarul Ameen said Bangladesh has put in place one of the largest and most complex Primary Education network in the world with more than 1.7 crore students, 3 lakh teachers and 62,000 schools.

In the last two decades, Bangladesh has made significant strides in reducing illiteracy which resulted in the increase of literacy rate from 35.3 percent in 1991 to 59.82 percent in 2011, he added.

The Primary and Mass Education Minister also highlighted the rapid progress achieved in this regard by the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The minister was accompanied by M Neazuddin Miah, Primary and Mass Education Secretary, and Shahidul Islam, Ambassador of Bangladesh to France and Permanent Delegate to Unesco.
