News - Extra pillars can’t prevent govt’s fall: BNP about cabinet expansion
Dhaka, Sept 13 (UNB) – Terming the cabinet expansion mere eyewash, opposition BNP on Thursday said the ‘trick’ will not help the government prevent it from its fall.

“The cabinet extension is nothing but eyewash. The house that has got tilted can’t be propped up with some extra pillars,” BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told UNB in his instant reaction to the government’s latest exercise of cabinet expansion.

Five new ministers and two state ministers were sworn in on Thursday afternoon.

Awami League leaders Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Mostafa Faruque Mohammad, AH Mahmood Ali and Whip Mujibul Haque, and JSD President Hasanul Haque Inu were sworn in as full ministers while Awami League MPs Abdul Hye and Omar Faruk Chowdhury as state ministers.
Mentioning that the wounds the government has suffered are not curable, Mosharraf said it is a trick to divert people’s attention from its failure and corruption by inducting some new faces in the cabinet.

He said Hasina knows it very well that the foundation of the government has already shaken and it is on the verge of collapse. “So, she’s trying to repair the base by adding some extra pillars to linger the fall. But they won’t be successful and their fall is imminent, certain.”

Mosharraf also considers the move as efforts to prevent the possible split in the 14-party alliance and gaggle the strong voice of the alliance partners talking against the government’s corruption, misrule and failure.

The BNP leader also said those inducted in the cabinet are not such charismatic persons who can help the government revive its lost reputation.

Earlier in the day, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam told reporters that the government has taken the move to prevent the split in the grand alliance and woo its partners.

“The days of the government are numbered. No antibiotic or coramine can prevent its fall. It’s downfall is a matter of time,” he told the journalists after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman along with members of newly-formed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal committee.

About the induction of a minister from among the grand alliance partners, Fakhrul said the government lives in fool’s paradise if it thinks of regaining the lost popularity by taking in a new minister from the alliance.’’

He said the government is trying to save its existence by the cabinet expansion as it has lost popularity and people’s confidence. “But, nothing can save it from the fall.”
