News - Sagar-Runi Murder: DNA test report from USA to reach soon
Dhaka, Sept 14 (UNB) - The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), investigating the sensational journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case, expects to receive the DNA test report from the USA at the end of this month.

Rab officials hope that there will be a marked progress in the investigation once the DNA test report reaches them.

Sagar Sarwar, news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at another TV channel, ATN Bangla, were killed in the small hours on February 11 at their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar. A case was later filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar thana over the incident.

The High Court on April 18 asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to hand over the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case to the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) for investigation.

Since then, the elite force has been conducting the investigation to indentify the killers of the journalist couple.

“We expect that the DNA test report from the USA will reach us at the end of this month,” said Commander Sohail, Director (legal & media wing), Rab Headquarters.

Asked why it takes too much time in having the DNA report, Commander Sohail said, “This is a very complex test…have patience.”

The High Court ordered Rab to investigate the sensational murder case as the police, its Detective Branch and Criminal Investigation Department failed to have any clue to the murder, Commander Sohail said.

He said as it is a clueless murder, it requires to use sophisticated technologies in the investigation. “The analysis of the crime scene and the forensic report is very important.”

Commander Sohail said: “We didn’t get crime scene analysis study report from the preliminary investigation as the evidences had been damaged.”

“The High Court specifically instructed us to collect up-to-date technology-based DNA expert opinion from outside the country, if needed,” Commander Sohail said and adding that the first sample for the DNA test was sent abroad in June.
