Bagerhat, Sept 14 (UNB) – Coast Guard members destroyed a den and an observation tower of pirates in Sundarbans in Dakop upazila of Khulna district on Friday.
During a three-hour drive from 6am, Coast Guard members of Mongla West Zone unearthed a den and a tower of the pirate gang Shahidul bahini at Adachai.
The den and tower were later demolished by setting fire.
However, none was arrested and no arms recovered during the drive.
M Saidur Rahman, zonal commander of Coast Guard Mongla West Zone, told UNB that they got secret information that members of the gang were preparing to commit a robbery in Sundarbans.
As a 20-member Coast Guard team reached Adachai area of Sundarbans, 25/30 pirates fled towards deep inside the forest sensing the presence of the Coast Guard members, said Saidur Rahman.
Later the Coast Guard members unearthed the den and tower.
Earlier on September 9, a joint team of the law enforcers recovered four firearms, other goods and destroyed six dens and three towers after a gunfight with the members of Shahidul bahini in Sundarbnas at Gewakhali.
Forty pirates, including nine ringleaders, were killed in gunfights with the law enforcers in Sundarbans from February 29, 2011 till September 8 this year.
