News - Killing people in the name of religion not acceptable: PM
Dhaka, Sept 16 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Islam never permits the killing of innocent people in the name of religion and her government has eradicated this social menace from the country.

“Bangladesh is now recognised as a model of communal harmony in the world as the present government has dealt with the social menace of killing people in the name of religion with an iron hand,” she said.

The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating the Hajj Programme-2012 of the Religious Ministry at the city’s Ashkona Hajj Camp.

Sheikh Hasina said her government for the first time in Bangladesh’s history adopted a five-year ‘National Hajj Policy’ to ensure better services to hajj pilgrims. “As a result, the entire hajj programme has come under a specific system along with enhanced facilities.”

The Prime Minister said her government has brought about a massive qualitative change in the country’s hajj management in the last three years.

In this regard, Hasina said the Saudi government evaluated Bangladesh as the best country in South Asia for its good Hajj management and recognised it formally.

Hasina said the number of hajj pilgrims increased to 1,12,500 this year from 58,000 in 2009 following the restoration of discipline and enhancement of services in hajj management by her government.

She said the government has taken various initiatives to increase facilities for pilgrims, including transferring Hajj Wing from Jeddah to Makkah, renting a plaza at Jeddah Hajj Terminal and introduction of ICT facilities, including opening a website on Hajj. “As per the commitment, four lifts and central AC system have been installed in the Hajj Camp in 2010.”

Hasina said Bangladesh Awami League always works for spreading Islam and as part of that her government for the first time in country’s history introduced website and digital version of Holy Quran in Bangla, English and Urdu using modern information technology.

She mentioned that the government has brought the Imams of mosques under proper training and involved them for the development of human resources.

Besides, she said, the present government has reopened mosque-based children and mass education project through Islamic Foundation, involving about Tk 643.55 crore.

She referred to massive development programmes, including establishment of the Islamic Foundation, introduction of reciting from the holy Quran at the opening and closing of Bangladesh Betar and BTV, taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Hasina said the improvement of Hajj management is a continuous process and her government will do that for the overall development in hajj management in the days to come.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan and State Minister for Religious Affairs Ministry Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan Mia were also present at the function.

After the inaugural function, a munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for the Almighty Allah for the smooth performance of hajj by the Bangladeshi pilgrims and their safe return.

Later, the Prime Minister exchanged pleasantries with pilgrims at the hajj camp and enquired about their wellbeing.
