News - Govt out to hold stage-managed polls without opposition: BNP
Dhaka, Sept 16 (UNB) – BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday alleged that the government is conspiring to hold a stage-managed early election without the main opposition.

“Awami League has realised they’ll suffer a humiliating defeat if the next general election is held under a non-party caretaker government. They’re now conspiring to hold a stage-managed early election under a partisan government leaving aside BNP,” he said while addressing a demonstration in front of BNP's Nayapaltan headquarters.

Dhaka city unit of the BNP-led 18-party alliance organised the programme protesting the unusual price hike of essentials, fuel oils and utility services, including power and water.

Terming the present regime fascist and autocratic, Mosharraf said having failed to run the country the government is now maneuvering to hang onto power by any means.

The government will not easily reinstate the caretaker government, he said, adding that there is no alternative to waging a harsher movement to oust this regime to save the country and its people.

Mosharraf urged all the pro-democratic people to remain alert against the government’s move to annihilate democracy. “People don’t want to see this corrupt, incompetent and failed government in power any more. They now want to get rid of this leadership.”

Describing the BNP chairperson’s month-long mass contact programme as a preparation for launching a vigorous movement, the BNP leader said they will force the government to quit and reinstate the caretaker government through a stronger movement.

About the recent cabinet expansion, Mosharraf said the government has done it to hush up its corruption and failures. “The boat which has already got capsized under the weight of corruption and failure can’t be lifted.”

Claiming that the government could not fulfill none of its election pledges, the former minister said people are going through a tough time due to non-stop price hike of essentials and utility services.

Passing an indemnity bill, he said, the ruling party men have plundered cores of taka in the name of quick rental power plants.

Chaired by Dhaka city BNP convenor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the programme was addressed, among others, by BNP leaders Selima Rahman, Fazlur Rahman Patol, and Aman Ullah Aman, Jamaat leaders Prof Mujibur Rahman, and Hamidur Rahman Azad and IOJ secretary Abdul Latif Nizami.
