Habiganj, Sept 19 (UNB) – At least 22 people were injured in factional clashes of local unit BNP at Shayestanagar in the town on Wednesday over receiving Khaleda Zia who will arrive here on Oct 6.

The clashes took place at a time when senior BNP leader Shamser Mobin Chowdhury was staying in Habiganj on the account of the BNP chairperson`s forthcoming visit to the north-eastern district.

Police and party sources said one faction, led by district unit BNP secretary Golam Kabir Gaus and the other led by organising secretary Enamul Haque Selim engaged in a clash at 5:15 pm over dominating the programmes for receiving Khaleda Zia in the town on Oct 6. Being informed police rushed in and dispersed the clashing factions at about 5:45 pm.

The two groups, equipped with lethal weapons, again locked horns over the same issues at 7:30 pm.

Police fired at least 44 rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed eight tear gas canisters to control the situation.
