RTI important for building a good society: Dr Kamal
Dhaka, Oct 22 (UNB) – Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain on Monday stressed the need for ensuring people’s right to information for building a good society with responsible citizens.
“People must have clear ideas about their basic rights, including their right to information…we’ll have to be aware about our rights first to be responsible citizens,” he told a seminar in the city.
Brac Community Empowerment Programme organised the national seminar, titled ‘Right to Information’ at Brac Centre Inn auditorium to share experience and expertise in accordance with its pilot project ‘Creating Awareness on RTI Law for Community Empowerment’.
Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Dr Kamal also said the negative aspects of Brac project should be identified for making people aware about their right to information.
Speaking on the occasion, Information Commissioner Prof Sadeka Halim said the Information Commission takes immediate steps in response to complaints lodged by people who face problems or difficulties in collecting information from any organisation.
Describing the RTI law as journalist-friendly, she said reporters of various dailies are making investigative reports using the law.
She also asked all concerned not to submit any application to have information about a subjudice matter.
SM Shamim Reza, an assistant professor of Dhaka University’s journalism department, presented the keynote paper on the Brac’s project sponsored by the World Bank and implemented in five upazilas from June 2011 to June this year.
In his presentation, Shamim Reza said the project had contributed a lot towards creating interest and confidence among rural people in using the RTI act.
Senior Public Sector Management specialist of the World Bank Vikram K Chand and executive director of Development Research Network (D.Net) Dr Ananya Raihan, among others, spoke at the seminar held with Brac University Vice Chancellor Prof Ainun Nishat in the chair.
