Dhaka, Nov 26 (UNB) - Shaheed Dr Milon Day will be observed across the country tomorrow (Friday), marking the 19th death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.
On that day in 1990, Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, the then joint secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), was shot dead by miscreants near TSC in Dhaka University.
Meanwhile, different organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes on the occasion.
The programmes include holding discussions, doa mahfil, placing wreaths and offering fateha at Dr Milon’s grave on the premises of Dhaka Medical College and at Dr Milon Memorial on Dhaka University campus.
Shaheed Dr Milon Sangsad will place wreaths at his grave and at Dr Milon Memorial in the morning.
The Sangsad will also organize a discussion on the life of Dr Milon.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages paid their deep tributes to the memory of Dr Milon and prayed for peace of his departed soul.
In his message, Zillur Rahman said mass movement turned a mass upsurge following sacrifice made by Dr Milon.
His sacrifice along with combined efforts of all paved the way for re-establishing democracy in the country, he said, adding that country’s every democracy loving people recall with deep respect the contribution made by the young physician.
In separate message, Sheikh Hasina termed Dr Milon as one of the pioneers in the movement for restoring democracy in the country.
“His sacrifice resulted in culmination of the anti-autocracy movement, which unseated the autocratic ruler from power within 10 days of the incident,” she said.
Establishing country’s democratic system on solid foundation and fulfilling fundamental rights of general people would be deemed as showing utmost respect to Dr Milon, said Hasina.
